In the spring of 1890, Mary Cassatt visited an exhibition of Japanese woodblock prints at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Afterward, she wrote to a friend about how moved she was by the exhibition: “I dream of it and don’t think of anything else but color on copper.” Inspired, Cassatt embarked on an ambitious set of ten color prints with the printer M. Leroy. Together, they developed this scene’s delicate lines, watercolor-like tones, and decorative patterns by printing three plates successively on the same sheet of paper. The set of ten prints, all of which depict female figures engaged in everyday activities, were shown at Cassatt’s first solo exhibition in Paris in 1891.
