This week’s edition of #HeroesofBrooklyn features Stephanie Samperi-González, a Greenpoint resident who designed a transparent face mask to help the hearing-impaired during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of Samperi-González’s relatives wears a hearing aid which made her realize that face coverings, although beneficial during the current public health crisis, make it difficult for those who rely on lip-reading to communicate effectively with members of the community. As a result, she and her husband created a face mask with a plastic window over the mouth to ensure the hard of hearing would be able to communicate with ease while still protecting themselves from the coronavirus. Samperi-González and her husband now donate these masks to Maimonides Medical Center, the donation program NYC Makes PPE, and also offer the masks on social media at @madewithease. #BrooklynStrong #NBATogether
