Chaïm Soutine painted like no other artist of the 1920s, heralded decades later by the post-war generation of American Abstract Expressionists who would claim him as a precursor to their newly instinctual approach to painting.⠀

Born in Belarus in 1893, Soutine first visited Cagnes-sur-Mer on the Côte d'Azur in 1918 with his friend Amedeo Modigliani and their art dealer Léopold Zborowski.⠀

From 1919-1922, the artist painted in southwestern France — working in isolation — and created numerous canvases of still-lifes and mountainous landscapes.⠀

The present work was formerly in the collection of actor Kirk Douglas, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 103. ⠀
