Animals use chemical signaling as a form of conveying information to other animals, in its physical absence. The olfactory signal can have a long-lasting effect than visible or auditory signaling. These could be urine, feces, glandular secretion, etc.
.
The dominant and prime male tiger seen rubbing its neck against the bark or tree is for such chemical signaling, excreting pheromones from the glands in the neck, that may be used to convey presence, alarm, defense, or attracting a mate.
