From Ennio’s “The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly” to Johnny’s “M*A*S*H”, the two of them were absolutely unparalleled…Both as musicians & human beings. It was an absolute honor to present my dear friend Ennio with his very 1st Oscar back in 2016, with @pharrell. This man had a 60+ year career & 5 nominations, but that marked his 1st win…so having the opportunity to surprise him with such a deserved honor & seeing the long overdue acknowledgment of the Maestro was a moment I’ll never, ever forget. And I’ll also never forget when Johnny (who had been one of my closest friends since he was with Basie & I was with Hamp) won a much deserved Grammy for “Best Arrangement on an Instrumental Recording” when he did “Velas” for my album, “The Dude”. From the Brill Building to “The Roller’s Club” (composed of me, Johnny, & Dave Grusin—we had to imagine rolling around under the piano, desperately searching for fresh material, because scoring for film was no walk in the park!!) the memories & music are endless. Two of the greatest film composers to ever put pen to score sheet & hold the baton…RIP Johnny & Ennio, you will be missed but your music will forever live in our souls.
