Photo by @beverlyjoubert They live for hundreds of years on average—and the most ancient among them can endure for millennia. For humans and wildlife alike, baobabs provide a rich and varied range of services–from food, shelter, and medicine … to simply a convenient feline perch. There have been worrying signs in recent decades that all is not well with these long-lived sentinels. One by one, Africa has been losing some of its oldest specimens—most likely as a result of the unprecedented temperature increases, shifting rainfall patterns, and deepening droughts linked to climate change. Even for younger trees, suitable habitats are shrinking. It’s deeply poignant to think that these giants among trees are disappearing from the landscapes they’ve watched over for millennia–because of the profound environmental changes we humans have ushered in over such a short space of time. #baobabs #trees #climatechange
