For humans and wildlife alike, baobabs provide a rich and varied range of services–from food, shelter, and medicine … to simply a convenient feline perch. There have been worrying signs in recent decades that all is not well with these long-lived sentinels. One by one, Africa has been losing some of its oldest specimens—most likely as a result of the unprecedented temperature increases, shifting rainfall patterns, and deepening droughts linked to climate change. Even for younger trees, suitable habitats are shrinking.
