Turns out physical distancing works for more than just humans. ⠀
⠀
Researchers in certain forests around the world have documented a phenomenon called “crown shyness¹,” in which the tops of trees refuse to touch, leaving gaps in the forest canopy. It’s an adaptation that shows how, even in the natural world, keeping your distance is the best way to prevent the spread of disease. ⠀
⠀
This tree version of social distancing, experts suggest, enables individual trees to get better access to necessary resources, such as sunlight. Being standoffish might also prevent the spread of parasitic insects or diseases, and allow more light to reach the forest floor, which in turn nurtures plants and animals that benefit the ecosystem as a whole. By protecting themselves, the trees are also protecting each other—and contributing to the health and wellbeing of their environment. ⠀
⠀
And you can do the same: as public health experts have confirmed time and again, the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is by staying home when you can, and maintaining six feet of distance between yourself and others when you have to go out. ⠀
⠀
Translation: If a tree can do it, we can too. ⠀
