I'm a social media specialist and writer based in New York, and my personal handle is @kaylelauren. I moved to NYC after graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) with a dual degree in English and journalism. I started my career helping people define and promote their brands online and in traditional media. It's since evolved into helping them utilize social media in ways that authentically connect them to their audiences/consumers. I've worked in restaurants and human resources departments, covered national press tours and movie premieres, and even did a brief stint on Capitol Hill. My professional experiences have confirmed what my personal life taught me early on: racism exists in every environment, and those not directly affected by it either miss its occurrence entirely or pick and choose when to notice it. I grew up in a biracial household. I attended the most diverse high school in the state of Pennsylvania - some students were refugees, others had family in the local chapter of the KKK. In many social circles, I was the "acceptable" Black friend: light-skinned, well-spoken, non-threatening. Such classifications have led to me being one of the few, if not only, Black voices in most of my professional settings. Social media is vital in the fight to end systemic racism, and I'm dedicated to using my position in the media industry to amplify Black voices and further educate people (and the platforms that reach them) on the struggles and inequality Black Americans continually face.
