This week’s edition of #HeroesofBrooklyn features the volunteers and community of @bedstuystrong, a mutual aid network and multifunctional online community of 4,000 neighbors helping each other in a spirit of solidarity and resourcefulness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since mid-March, Bed-Stuy Strong has been collecting and redistributing small, crowdsourced donations to provide a week’s supply of groceries to more than 10,000 residents in Bed-Stuy — an estimated 212,000 meals. Bed-Stuy Strong's members come from all walks of life, from service workers to software engineers to artists, and represent a mix of newer and longstanding residents of Bed-Stuy. Every dollar the group receives is used to purchase groceries and basic supplies for vulnerable neighbors, 85% of whom are elderly, immunocompromised, or disabled.
