Cotton is a very water-intensive crop, but it is a major agricultural commodity for Pakistan—the cotton and textile industries bring more than half of Pakistan's foreign exchange earnings. As one of the most water-stressed countries in the world, Pakistan has little room for error when it comes to using its resources wisely. However, large landowners can sometimes be wasteful, leaving little supply for subsistence farmers. Despite its incredible dependence on the Indus River to irrigate rice, wheat, cotton, and other crops, climate change and political tensions with upstream neighbor India make long-term reliance on the Indus perilous.
