I’m currently working in northern Kenya's Sarara valley, alongside a team of vets who are vaccinating dogs and cats. Dogs in particular are important to these pastoralist communities, functioning as guard dogs in the villages and as protection from predators, such as the lion, leopard, and cheetah, when herding livestock in the bush. However, they carry viruses that can be transmitted to both humans and wildlife, such as canine distemper and rabies. In 2017, almost the entire wild dog population was wiped out in Laikipia by an outbreak of canine distemper, so vaccinating these dogs is a priority. The cats are kept by the Samburu to manage the mice found in the villages, and also as pets. They can also carry rabies and cat flu, which can be transmitted to wildlife in the larger ecosystem, so they too are vaccinated. The aim was to vaccinate 3,000 dogs/cats from January to June this year, and despite the arrival of another virus that we are all too familiar with now, the team has managed to continue their work and expects to exceed their target number. It’s tough work—neither the cats nor the dogs are that used to being handled—and it's vital work, as we battle to understand more about diseases affecting wildlife and humans alike. Without the support of all those listed below this simply wouldn’t happen, and funding may not be available in the future to continue this program with the pandemic's devastating impact on tourism income in Kenya.
