Our next Tate colleague sharing their favourite artwork is Bernard Horrocks, Tate's Intellectual Property Manager. 📚 Bernard helps us navigate the complexities of copyright law for our collection, exhibitions, archive and commerce.
'This artwork was used on the new £20 note, launched on 20/02/2020! I managed the licence arrangements between Tate and the Bank of England. It was a fascinating process. The Bank doesn't reproduce the portrait like-for-like but has its own team of artists and engravers to create a special rendition for the notes. It was great on launch day at Tate Britain to see the self-portrait itself next to a low-editioned £20 note the Bank donated to our Archive. The note's serial number ended with "1799" - the year the self-portrait was made. And I think Turner looks especially handsome in this radiant and glimmering work!'
