Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she is undergoing chemotherapy to treat a recurrence of cancer but remains "fully able" to stay on the Supreme Court. "I have often said I would remain a member of the Court as long as I can do the job full steam. I remain fully able to do that," the 87-year-old liberal justice said. Friday's statement indicates that the pancreatic cancer Ginsburg was treated for in 2009 returned, this time in her liver, and that she tried one of the new immunotherapies for cancer, but it failed to shrink the tumors. Ginsburg has had several bouts with cancer. She had colon cancer in 1999, tumors removed from a lung in 2018, and was treated for pancreatic cancer in 2019.
