“I say to people today, 'You must be prepared if you believe in something. If you believe in something, you have to go for it. As individuals, we may not live to see the end.'” — Rep. John Lewis (1940-2020), a committed leader of the Civil Rights Movements who reminded us to always stir up #GoodTrouble. Here’s a snapshot of his extraordinary life, leadership, service, and light: ⁣

February 21, 1940: John Lewis was born (a blessing to the world) to parents who were sharecroppers. ⁣

1957: As a student, learned about nonviolent protest and helped organize sit-ins at segregated lunch counters. ⁣

1961: Participated in the Freedom Rides, a series of protests through the American South against the segregation of bus terminals. ⁣

1963: Became Chairman of the SNCC and as one of the "Big Six" leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, helped plan the March on Washington at which Lewis was the youngest speaker at the event.⁣

1965: To bring attention to voter disenfranchisement, Lewis and Hosea Williams led a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. After crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the marchers were attacked by state troopers. Lewis was severely beaten, suffering a fractured skull. ⁣

1970: Became director of the Voter Education Project that registered millions of minoritized voters. ⁣

1986: Elected to the House of Representatives and ever since has called for and led healthcare reform, measures to fight poverty, improvements in education, and renewals of the Voting Rights Act. ⁣

July 17, 2020: John Lewis passed away, leaving a legacy for generations to come. His work continues with all of us. #RIPJohnLewis
