Tulip mania across the centuries: ‘Still life of four tulips in a Wan-Li porcelain vase’ by Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder is dated to the years shortly after 1610, and in the simplicity of its arrangement of only four blooms of tulips, is unusual in the artist’s oeuvre. Dated 1923, ‘Still life with Tulips and Fan’ by Samuel John Peploe is a joyous celebration of colour, painted in a bold modernist style. Both artists – some 400 years apart – celebrate this most popular of bulbs in their own inimitable fashion.
