In her last days, her close family (my three brothers, their two wives, my aunt and cousin, my husband and kids) all had the opportunity to share private time with her. We got to say our thank you’s, our “I love you”s and our goodbyes. She was quite matter-of-fact about moving on and we’re all following her lead. In a way, it makes perfect sense — she was forward-facing, her greatest drive to create toward a better future. She believed in the possibilities for everyone. She was an artist in many respects and she loved any excuse to make a day or a moment more special. She was a mother and grandmother that I aspire to emulate — patient, encouraging, wise, defiantly joyful and mischievous til the end. In a kind of crazy but actually most perfect confluence of events, my brother, Brando and his girlfriend, Natalie are getting married this weekend. Mom was adamant that they didn’t postpone, “no matter what”, and so they are granting her wishes we all will continue do what she did — face forward, imagine the possibilities of the future, work to create each day as special! We will celebrate love and the beautiful life they will have together! She does not want you to be sad for her, or for us. Crack a smile, “no matter what”.
