The death of civil rights titan John Lewis is sparking calls to rename Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge, where he and hundreds of others made history decades prior while marching for the right to vote. Instead of paying tribute to Edmund Pettus, a Confederate officer and Ku Klux Klan leader, the bridge could instead commemorate the late congressman, who died this past Friday. But we need more than monuments, urges Melissa Harris-Perry. “I don’t care about statues or memorials. As a Southerner, raised amid pervasive Confederate iconography, I am not overly concerned with what chunk of concrete or metal will be raised or renamed to honor the late Congressman John Lewis,” @mharrisperry writes. “He was human, not granite. He felt cold and pain.
