Ernest Hemingway, born #onthisday in 1899, first published 'The Old Man and the Sea' in its entirety in the September 1, 1952 issue of LIFE. Although Hemingway was a friend of the magazine in one sense, LIFE photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, who took this famous cover photo, called the writer, “the most difficult man I ever photographed."
