Moscow, 1992: A shadowy sentry stands guard as his partners sell shots of homemade wine to snow-flecked Muscovites in Krasnopresenskaya Square. As Russia began to come out of hibernation after seven decades of strict Soviet central planning, moonshiners such as these from the fertile Caucasus—four days by car from Moscow—are free to travel and run their own small businesses.

This image was the opening spread in my first @ナショナルジオグラフィック story on Russia and the former Soviet Union, titled, “Broken Empire,” and is now on display at the 2020 Festival La Gacilly-Baden Photo, alongside two exhibitions of my work, “Moscow – Winds of Change,” and “The Long Shadow of Chernobyl.”

Festival La Gacilly-Baden will run from July 14 to October 26. Entry is free and open to the public (social distancing rules apply). A special open-air, celebratory weekend is scheduled for August 13-16. For more information on the festival, go to the link in my bio.
