Wayne Lawrence photographed Rep. John Lewis in his Washington, D.C., office in February 2019. "I’m always a little nervous at the beginning of a session, but when he greeted me, he looked me straight in the eye and said, 'It's so good to see you here,' and I knew exactly what he meant," Lawrence recalls. "When you step into his office, if you had no idea who he was, the walls had dozens of stories to tell. Amazing photographs, and so much more, were evidence of the incredible sacrifices that him and others have made so that people who look like me could be recognized and respected in this country." Lawrence's portrait accompanies a remembrance by activist, educator and writer Brittany Packnett Cunningham (@mspackyetti): "Among the greatest to farm the lands of liberation, John Lewis sits high in the American canon of heroes because his blood and tears watered the ground on which we now stand."
