While completing homework WAS a part of her probation, I have a hard time believing that in this unprecedented time, during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC, the same decision TO LOCK HER AWAY would be made if this was a white teenager. THIS is systemic racism. It’s unacceptable. In Michigan, Black youth are incarcerated at FOUR times the rate of their white peers. The school-to-prison pipeline robs too many Black children of their potential- ending educational opportunities and cycling them through the criminal legal system. This week, there was a new hearing and the judge DENIED a motion for Grace to be released from the detention center. Again, I have a hard time believing that if this were a 15 year old white child, the situation would be the same. I also personally feel like the judge doesn’t want to appear “weak” by reversing her bad decision due to national attention and so she’s refusing to do what’s right.
