It is located in the northeastern area of the province of Guantánamo, close to Haiti. Difficult to access, surrounded by mountains, rivers and the sea, with plenty of vegetation that makes it a place of extreme natural beauty, the city is a national monument; its inhabitants, located far away from Cuba’s tourism hubs, are entrepreneurs, friendly and welcoming. The city is located in an area that has been stricken by hurricanes. ⁠ ⁠ In 2008, Hurricane Ike penetrated up to 400m inland, destroying the city’s market and many houses on the shore. Hurricane Sandy in 2012, and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 — the most powerful, with winds of 220 km/h— devastated the city, leaving much of it in ruins. Then, again, in 2017, Hurricane Irma caused significant damage.
