It was not my intention to do so. I’d been reading about how the four month moratorium on evictions was ending putting 12 million renters at risk of being thrown out on the street. A homeless crisis lopped onto a pandemic sounded, well, pretty bad. Also, I had been drinking. So I pulled out a fresh checkbook and volunteered to write rent checks for Chivers who had fallen on hard times. I assumed 100 or so people would write in for help. Because I am both naive and dumb. Thousands wrote in who desperately needed help. And then thousands more offered to help. We needed a plan and now we have one. We set up a GoFund me with the help of Chive Nation and Central Florida Chivers with a $20,000 goal to help the 50 people we have identified as “imminent eviction”. That goal was smashed in 11 minutes flat. After a single hour $85,000 has been raised and I am now re-opening the ENTIRE campaign for anybody who needs our help.
