In 2016, my life was changed forever by @kodewithklossy, which has since become my space of empowerment and the coolest summer job imaginable. I’m so grateful to @karliekloss for sharing her platform with me today! I’ve always gravitated toward both analysis and creation of visuals—as one of the original Kode With Klossy scholars, HTML/CSS was my thing. While aesthetics are nowhere near the most critical element of successful organizing or activism, I think there is something to be said for seeking liberation that is also beautiful. I believe that’s why my fundraiser for the National Bail Fund Network at the beginning of quarantine was so successful (see 2nd slide)—I made custom digital collages in exchange for every donation. It’s still surreal to consider that my Photoshop projects may have allowed someone to spend the night in their own bed rather than in a jail cell. Usually my role as an Instructor Assistant breezes me in and out of new cities and connects me with brilliant young women living in each one. This summer, though not exactly familiar, isn’t much different. I’ve mentored some incredible scholars from the STL area (shoutout to the Bread-Sliced Bagels! 🥯) and watched them present stunning, comprehensive resource guides and action items related to the Black Lives Matter Movement. All that’s left to do is wait patiently for their work to arrive on the App Store. When I’m not debugging a Swift program or leading a Brain Break, I am playing around with various design tools to enhance the words of my amazing peers like @_bri_chandler_ or student-led movements like @abolishwashuwpaandifc (more on this in story!) I’ve also laid bare how draining it has felt to exist as a Black woman over the past few months. It’s my hope that what I design makes it harder to look away from the institutions that have failed us.
