“In 1992 Mandy [Miranda Coney] and I danced Coppélia in London [at the Coliseum, where the audience included Diana [Princess of Wales]. That was the most amazing night. When we met Diana afterwards Mandy was so sweet and calm and I was an incoherent mess. I got to sit next to Diana during dessert: it was incredible. I’d been on the Chanel table, so she said: ‘I’m wearing my Chanel shoes’ and she passed them to me under the table. She said she had to be very careful of shoe heights, but they were perfect.” As the much-loved former principal dancer turned artistic director of the @ausballet prepares to retire after a stellar 37-year career, David McAllister reflects on a lifetime of dance and the women who have helped shape it.
