"My mother taught me in the very beginning that I should never let my color stand in my way — that I could do anything that anyone else could do. There were many times, before I let that sink in that I returned a blow for a blow. But I found that, whenever I could, it was always better to take that venom and that thing that builds hatred in you and to turn it into work."

Gordon Parks, one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, was a humanitarian with a deep commitment to social justice. He left behind an exceptional body of work that documents American life and culture from the early 1940s into the 2000s, with a focus on race relations, poverty, civil rights, and urban life. Parks was also a distinguished composer, author, and the first African American filmmaker to helm a studio film. The issues raised by Parks throughout his career are uncanny to the major conversations surrounding race today. His work is as important as ever and demonstrates just how much change still needs to happen within our country.

Parks' legacy of capturing and celebrating Black life continues to live on through his foundation's Arts and Social Justice Fund which champions current and future generations of artists and humanitarians by providing scholarships and fellowships for the continuation of their work, and have benefitted such brilliant visionaries as @hankwillisthomas @derrickadamsny @bydvnlln and
@ninachanel .
