i was nominated by @akenyamusic @chefcharitymorgan & @tea_huntress and i accept the challenge. i have read and researched the origins of this social media movement and found conflicting reports. regardless of why you choose to participate, i’d like to make it a moment to acknowledge the womxn we’ve lost to domestic violence or gender-related killings. if you haven’t heard about the protests against #femicide in Turkey, take a moment to learn. if you haven’t yet considered how a global pandemic (and subsequent lockdowns) means some womxn around the world have been forced to quarantine with their abusers... take a moment with that thought. i would be nothing without the women in my family, many of whom survived multiple bouts of domestic violence from male partners. if 2020 is a reckoning, let it include our eyes opening to the misogyny that is ingrained into our collective culture. no matter how you identify, we are all vulnerable to internalizing a deep-seated misunderstanding of who and what women really are — there is “woman” inside of every living thing. to respect us is to respect the very earth you and i will be buried in, someday. thank you for reading.
