I am a mother and a former refugee who helps other refugees resettle in the U.S. And I am a Black woman. This photo I am sharing today is from the day I arrived in the U.S. in 2007- a day I’ll never forget. For this post, I want to share another story with you that I keep thinking about, a story from years before that day. It happened when I was in fifth grade, and about ten or eleven years old. I travelled far to go to school at the time. I would take two to three buses home at night. One night, the buses were not running and I was unable to find transportation. I waited for hours, not knowing what to do. I was a little girl alone and shivering late in the night. A woman I did not know approached me. She offered to take me to her house to let me stay with her, and we would try again the next day to get me home. I went with that woman. She was a stranger but because of her, I was able to sleep safely and peacefully through that night. I tell this story to ask all of you, “Could we all be that woman? Can we give every person, every child in this country that peaceful place to sleep?”」8月3日 2時09分
