Today would have been James Baldwin’s 96th birthday. A hero, a thinker, a Black queer activist, the definition of a great American, and a gorgeous writer. If you haven’t read him, you owe it to yourself. Just make sure you read with a highlighter because you’ll want to remember every line. My two favorites are The Fire Next Time, a stunning gut punch of a read that you’ll come back to over and over again. Plus it’s 100 pages so truly no excuse. And Giovanni’s Room is indispensable queer lit. And for God’s sake watch his debates with William F. Buckley on YouTube. Wish he were still with us.
