It was the second day of two trips to India, the first in late 2018 for the @natgeo story, Water Everywhere, And Nowhere. If you ask anyone, even a local, whether they really know India, don’t believe anything if they say yes. That’s like saying they know the mysteries of the universe, and the numerical value of the square root of three. I have been to this unbelievable country on maybe twelve or more visits previous, knowing well nothing ever is how we might imagine, especially on the second day driving and walking across all of north India. Ram @kewalmauryatravels and I were making our way to Amritsar in Punjab when we passed by a lake adjacent to what could have been a nuclear facility. Thanks to the internet, a simple search described these four silos as the Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Power Plant in Bathinda. It helped power the state’s mammoth irrigation needs. It also blanketed Bathinda with coal ash, causing nasal, eye, and respiratory problems and damage to local ecosystems (it shut down in 2017 after 43 years). I usually become elated when pieces come together, followed by the ensuing struggle of somehow to make four massive inanimate objects somewhat interesting. In homage to the gift of light, two trees, a randomly placed bicycle of simple sweet design, advertisements for a beauty salon tacked to the trees, the stillness of water and a young boy who out of nowhere came running by, that day I could breathe feeling the next 58 days might be a lesser struggle. Of course, I was wrong. And that too is the beauty. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ India’s Daunting Challenge: There’s Water Everywhere, And Nowhere - Chapter 8 of the @outofedenwalk, my latest story in the August 2020 issue of @natgeo magazine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @natgeo @outofedenwalk #walkingindia #edenwalk #india #punjab #bathinda #powerstation #gurunanakdev #lake #bicycle #boy #running #boyrunning」8月6日 13時27分 - johnstanmeyer
