At the best of times, 60% of women who say they want to breastfeed either aren’t able to, or they run into challenges that force them to stop sooner than they’d hoped. While many of these challenges can be overcome with the right help, the pandemic has made those resources nearly impossible for new mothers to access. Outside of hospitals, almost every form of face-to-face support that new mothers can normally turn to—breastfeeding groups, in-home visits from trained specialists—has disappeared. While there are options online for new mothers to turn to for support, they can often be hard to troubleshoot over a video or online forum, leaving women to figure things out for themselves—or not, according to research conducted.
