We’ve never had a dog before Stella, so I was naturally curious about how it would be to camp with our dog. This summer we took her out on her first real backpacking/camping trip up into the Sierra Nevada near where we live. And we have some tips we’d like to share with you. Tip #1 The first step to camping with dogs is to make sure that they are allowed and to follow the rules for the area that you’re in. You don’t want to make the mistake of having your dog off leash in a National Park or any place where it’s illegal. Tip #2 Why are dogs limited in parks and wild areas? Simply put, dogs are high impact on flora and fauna. Some dogs tear up plants and chase animals. Check the land managers regulations before you head out and keep your dog under control at all times. Tip #3 For every mile we walk Stella runs approximately 10. It’s important to be aware of your dog’s energy levels. If you are backpacking to a far-away place, consider keeping them on leash for the first few miles so they don’t blow all their energy early on. Tip #4 Are you hot and thirsty on the trail? So is your dog! Don’t forget to bring snacks and water for them. Tip #5 On Stella’s first camp-out, we slept under the stars. We had her on a leash so she wouldn’t rove around all night, but she stayed on high alert. For their own safety it’s important to keep your dog secure and right next to you at night, and you should also provide something comfortable for them to sleep on. Although we didn’t sleep much that night, it was awesome to have her there with us. The first few camping trips with your dog are going to be a learning experience, both for you and your pet.” Sleep Under The Stars Night is this Saturday! It’s the perfect opportunity to practice camping with your pup…even if you’re sleeping in your own backyard.
