When Jerry Volenec, a dairy farmer in Wisconsin, attended a town-hall discussion led by Donald Trump’s Secretary of Agriculture, he walked away disappointed with how the Administration planned to address the economic crisis gripping Wisconsin’s family farms. “I walked in there knowing that’s how they felt,” Volenec said, referring to the Trump Administration’s lack of interest in small farms. “The part that was unnerving to me was that he said it to our faces. They’re not trying to hide it anymore. They’re telling us flat out: You’re not important.” And yet, as Trump’s poll numbers drop nationwide, rural voters in Wisconsin may hold the key to his reëlection.
