“I didn’t know that you could actually do tricks with a skateboard in the beginning,” says professional skateboarder Jonny Giger (@jonny_chinaski_giger), reminiscing on his early experiences of skateboarding as a young boy growing up in a small Swiss town.⁣

After studying a freestyle trick book and watching online street skateboarding tutorials, “I somehow ended up mixing those two styles, which makes my skating kind of unique,” he says of his style that combines flat ground skating, tricks, flips and negotiating urban obstacles.⁣

“I’m more the type of skater that enjoys learning new tricks. I don’t necessary like to repeat the same trick over and over again to make it look super stylish and push the perfection of it.”⁣

“My favorite things about skateboarding is super simple stuff, like pushing around and getting my head clear and just focusing on the present, the now. The feeling of relief and joy when you finally land a trick after failing at it for, like, a hundred, up to a thousand tries or more. And watching beginners skate and see the joy they have when they land their first kickflips. It’s like a time machine.”⁣
