Today is the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the #19thAmendment to the U.S. Constitution which granted women the right to vote, acknowledging them for the first time as full citizens.

This step toward equality was not one given, but hard won by the struggle, courage, and determination of generations of women. Despite the amendment, women of color, immigrants, and lower income women were often deterred from voting by laws and social pressure. We can honor the legacy of these activists for equality by exercising and defending the right to vote this election season.

This newsreel from the #MoMACollection highlights the first stop of a “Suffrage Hike” that began on February 12, 1913 in Newark, New Jersey. Led by New York’s Rosalie “The General” Jones and Ida “The Colonel” Craft, the group of sixteen suffragists marched to Washington, D.C. for the National American Women Suffrage Association parade set for March 3, the day before President Woodrow Wilson's inauguration. When the hikers arrived in Newark to begin the march, hundreds of other supporters joined their “ranks” in a long procession through the streets.
