Photo by @Joel Sartore I A subspecies of the American manatee, the Antillean manatee is one of the more mysterious species of sea cow. While these gentle mammals are found in coastal waters throughout the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, their most important habitat is found along the coast of Belize. This habitat gives manatees access to different areas where they can eat, drink, rest, mate, and nurse their young. In the wild, manatees face several threats, but the greatest comes from an increase in human activities, resulting in entanglement in fishing nets and collisions with propellers and boat hulls. You can protect manatees by reducing your speed on the water. This makes it easier for you to spot manatees and gives them the time they need to get out of the boat’s path.
