In celebration of #NationalAviationDay, we’re taking you back to where it all started in 1942, when a group of GE engineers launched the first American jet engine, I-A, as a way to help win WWII.

The project was so secretive, that even though more than a thousand people were working on the project, only a small group of engineers—referred to as the “Hush-Hush Boys”— actually knew what they were building at the time.

Later, they would look back on that time as the moment that sparked an aircraft industry revolution, cementing GE’s long legacy of aviation innovation.
