“I grew up in this community. They helped me to learn and excel in my profession," says Kalkidan, a nurse working with @unicefethiopia. "Serving them and teaching them about how to prevent COVID-19 makes me happy.”

For most of her career Kalkidan has worked in the vaccination department, on infant and maternal health. She teaches pregnant women to follow up their monthly checkups, to deliver their baby in the health center with skilled attendants, to track their health and the health of their baby, and to regularly bring their baby in for immunization.

With #COVID19, one of their greatest initial challenges was countering rumors that going to the health center would expose people to the virus. Mothers and pregnant women were avoiding the health center, even for delivery. #RealLifeHeroes like Kalkidan are helping change this. @un_ocha
