For 21-year-old poetic lyricist Joy Crookes, whose music transcends genres from Jazz to Soul, writing songs is her musical diary. Crookes’ voice coated in elegance and edged with her husky tone is smooth like honey. An invitation to her heart, challenges, past and present - her spellbinding music has you in a trance that you don’t want to break. On the release of her recent song ‘Anyone But Me’ Crookes says, “I wasn’t writing it to be any sort of mental health anthem, it just finally felt like the right time to speak on some of the things that I have been challenged with throughout the majority of my life and to normalise that for myself, not for anyone else”. Of Bangladeshi and Irish heritage, Crookes grew up in South London’s Elephant and Castle, also the home of Charlie Chaplin and Michael Caine. She is recognised for fusing her South Asian influences with her everyday style. Always adorned with gold Jhumki (traditional South Asian earrings), her ears sparkle framed by braided plaits entwined with a cotton fabric from navy to beige. The singer-songwriter was 16 when she made the conscious decision to embrace her culture through her style, “It was because of my Art GCSE that I started to learn about the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and how she was so proud of herself and her culture and I just felt like I should be proud of who I am”. As she prepares to release her highly anticipated first album, Crookes is a self-confessed ball of emotions, “I’m excited, angry and every emotion in one” she jokes, “that is the only way to describe it. You can only put it out once so it is the weirdest feeling in the whole world”. But, what can we expect from the album? Crookes summarises, “It’s very honest, a lot of different genres, lots of different musical influences and hopefully a nice rating on The Guardian”.
