As is characteristic of Jusepe de Ribera's masterful work, the Apostle is given a three-dimensional presence, seeming to be vitally alive, with a commanding force of personality and intent of purpose. Ribera varied his painting technique for the different parts of the composition; from the pigment-loaded brush swept along to show fabric to the wet-on-wet technique he used to reveal darker tones.⠀
