For communities impacted by natural disasters, temporary school closures are not new; unfortunately, students in affected communities often have to wait for 1, 2 and even 4 years for a safe school and have to study in very unsafe environments. Imagine their world today. They have been hit by not one, but at least two disasters. They have already lost their schools, homes and loved ones due to Hurricanes, Earthquakes and other natural disasters and now COVID-19 is yet another roadblock on their path to recovery. They need our help desperately. The scale of educational disruption we are experiencing globally right now, however, is unparalleled and unprecedented. If nothing is done, it could threaten childrens’ rights to education around the world. Education is crucial, not only in supporting communities’ recovery post-disaster, but also in combating poverty and creating sustainable development. School is where hope begins.
