Speaking of Andy Warhol, I recently came across this old invitation. The one of the very first “famous” people that I have met in NY was Stephen Sprouse. I was just out of college, and we were working on helping out his (sort of considered come-back) collection. This is around the time he did the collaboration with Louis Vuitton. I remember that once I went to some fashion event in Dumbo alone. I got to this outdoor area for the event and I didn’t know anyone because I was new to this scene, and from afar Stephen yelled out my name. He was sitting with someone and waving at me to join them, and I was surprised that he remembered my name but also especially because he was always usually kind of shy and quiet, so I was stunned that he called out my name. And I was also touched that he was kind enough to invite a young and lost kid to hang out with them. He was a very lovely guy. I guess I was so happy that he called out that night and appreciated his small kind gesture (though I doubt that he saw it that way) so much that I still vividly remember it after 20 years. He passed away a few years later. I was fortunate to meet someone who was so nice and humble to give me a right impression of the city and have our lives cross paths right before his passing and beginning of my life in NY.

#ウォーホル といえば。大学を出て、会社をパートナー達と始めてすぐの頃NYで初めて出会った「有名」な人は #スティーブンスプラウス でした。これは彼がルイ・ヴィトンとのコラボコレクションをしていた頃で、私達は彼自身のいわゆるカムバック・コレクションの手伝いを会社でしていました。ある夜私はDUMBOにてのファッションイベントに一人で出かけたのですが、大学を出たてで、NYシーンに誰もこれといって知り合いのいなかった私は、少し迷っていて、その上手持ち無沙汰で感じで、きらびやかな人たちにに囲まれて居心地の良くない気持ちでいました。すると遠くから、スティーブンが大きな声で私の名を呼んで、彼は彼の友達と二人だったのですが、一緒にハングアウトしようと誘ってくれました。彼が私の名前を覚えていたのも驚きだったのですが、普段はシャイで静かな彼が大声で公共のの場で呼んできたのが驚きでした。私はこの出来事が嬉しく、20年経った今でも覚えている程感謝しています。彼はその数年後に亡くなってしまいましたが、とても良い人でした。彼の人生の終わりと私のNY生活の始まりに、優しく謙虚な彼に出会えて、NYへの良いファーストインプレッションになったのは私にとって幸運だったと思います。
