Albumen prints like this one were the most common form of photographic prints in the mid-19th century. In this process, egg whites were used to bind photographic chemicals to the paper itself.

Produced before the advent of color processing, albumen prints were sometimes colored by hand to add additional layers of depth to their compositions.

"Sacred Bridge," 1865, albumen silver print, hand-colored.
