“I foresaw the crash of the gallery system,” says Lucien Smith, who, after skyrocketing to art-world fame in the early 2010s, has spent the past few years in Montauk, away from the spotlight. “Maybe it’s because of COVID now, but what I think, and what I seem to see happening, is that a lot of galleries are just not able to function.
