This impressive 9-litre Salmanazar of Ornellaia’s 2017 vintage has been personalised by the acclaimed Argentinian artist Tomás Saraceno, who was invited by the Tuscan winery to interpret the character of the estate’s 2017 wine, “Solare” (Radiant), to celebrate the 12th edition of Ornellaia’s ‘Vendemmia d’Artista’ project – an annual event for which a contemporary artist creates a site-specific work of art and limited-edition labels for a series of large-format bottles, culminating in an auction raising money in support of the arts.

With the issue of environmental sustainability close to Ornellaia’s heart, the winery entered a creative partnership with an artist who is renowned for his interactive installations that allude to sustainable ways of living. Seeking inspiration from the Sun and Earth, Saraceno created a site-specific installation for the estate consisting of glass spheres resembling clouds, which form a magical floating city powered by the heat of the sun. A take on this concept is the sculpture “Pneuma 4.21x105”, a small-scale version of which floats atop this Salmanazar, tethered to the neck of the bottle.

Bidding opens today on our sale of these limited-edition bottles - the singular Salmanazar and a number of Imperials - each one personalised by Saraceno with thermo-chromic labels depicting various phases of a solar eclipse, allowing them to change colour when interacting with the heat emitted from the human hand.

As part of a three year partnership announced by @ornellaiawinery in 2019, proceeds will support the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s ‘Mind’s Eye’ programme, developed by its education department to help individuals who are blind or have low vision experience art through all their senses.
