@sistahspace_ is a truly incredible community-based non-profit initiative created to bridge the gap in domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls in Hackney and as I write this post they are being evicted from their space by the @hackneycouncil and @mayorofhackney. The council is trying to move the "Sistah Space" out of its council-owned building just so it can rent it out for profit. In a time where the number of domestic violence cases has seen such a sharp rising this is how the council shows us how much they care about DV and the lives of Black women. I went to their protest to save the space on Monday and was so moved by founder Ngozi Fulani and all other beautiful humans who spoke to defend the space. It’s hardly surprising that Black women who are victims of domestic abuse often mistrust the police, or struggle to believe that going to them would ever help their situations. Sistah Space is a completely distinctive and important space for Black women to seek advice and support. I’ve attached a screenshot of a letter from @mayorofhackney Philip Glanville, pledging to be a better ally to the Black community in the wake up the uprisings around Black Lives sparked by the death of George Floyd. And this is how you express your allyship Mayor Glanville? Performative virtue signalling, your words mean nothing. If you let this eviction continue you will have blood on your hands! The eviction and failure to communicate with @sistahspace_ is state violence! Please comment + share to spread the world. check the link in my bio to read more about the space and see what you can do to help!❤️#safespaceforsistahspace
