*SHOULD* being the operative term here. Sadly, there is a very real segment of society that has no issue with it at all and even more terrifying there is a vast segment of society who don’t know or believe that such a thing is happening.

Let me be as clear as I can: white supremacy is a cancer and it sickens everyone and everything is comes into contact with; that includes the police.

I admire good cops. I’ve seen some truly goddamned super human heroism from police officers that has left me humbled and in awe. And I have seen, first hand, how bad cops toxify and rot the culture of policing to the point that these good cops, these heroic, dedicated officers stay quiet and motionless in the face of criminal behavior. I’ve seen good cops look at the ground and remain silent as friends of mine were called the worst slurs in the book by men in police uniforms. We’ve all seen the pictures of the Louisville PD posing, mockingly, at the murder site of Elijah McClain because they wanted some photos to “cheer up” a fellow officer and we’ve seen the brutalization, the dehumanizing and the murder of far too many Black, Native American, Latinex, Trans and LGBTQ folks to not stop and as a community ask what the hell is happening in our society and in the culture of our police.

And let’s be very clear: they are OUR police. The tax dollars from ALL of us go to pay salary and benefits. In what kind of twisted world are we not granted the power of oversight? We are. And we get to say, loudly and clearly: this must change and it must change now. If you work for the public you can’t be a member, or COLLUDE with members, of paramilitary or white supremacist organizations.

That’s a pretty fucking low bar, folks. And yet, we haven’t even met that.

I want to lift up good officers. To ensure their culture is supported and given its proper due. But we cannot support a cancerous culture. You don’t fight lung cancer by continuing to smoke.

I don’t know. Just some thoughts. (I’m turning off comments because I won’t provide a platform for racists, apologists or the like.)
