#GuggenheimAtLarge: In the latest installment of the Guggenheim Circular, we’re exploring the theme of “Time,” in all its forms and intricacies.
⠀
“In his ‘I Got Up’ series, On Kawara uses a rubber stamp to declare the minute and hour of the day at which he got out of bed: for example, ‘I GOT UP AT 11:38 AM.’ The series consists of postcards that he sent to different recipients: two postcards per day, every day, for twelve years between 1968 and 1979, totaling over 8,000 pieces. For Kawara, sending these messages was a delayed transmission of a mundane act. Shared with friends, family, collectors, colleagues, the postcards were Kawara’s way of announcing that he’d begun his day.” —Margarita Lizcano Hernandez (@margaritalizca), Curatorial Assistant, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project
