💪🏾WANT BIG CALVES?!
There are many muscles that go into lower leg development, but we will focus on those that create the aesthetically pleasing, superficial muscles.

The calf may seem like a singular muscle, but like the rivers of immortality, there is much below the surface. The palpable muscle at the back of our lower leg are known as the triceps surae. This three headed muscle gives the shape and form to the coveted muscle. They are the strongest supinators of the foot, allowing it to move upward. The triceps surae is composed of two distinct muscles: the gastrocnemius and soleus (and possibly the plantaris)

The gastrocnemius muscle has two heads: the medial and lateral heads. The medial head originates at the medial epicondyle (a bony protrusion on the medial side of the lower end of the femur). The lateral head originates at the lateral epicondyle (a smaller, bony protrusion on the opposite side of the lower femoral end). These heads unite into a broad, flat tendon to join with the soleus.
The soleus works with the gastrocnemius to provide plantar flexion of the foot. This allows you to lift your heel against gravity and is pivotal in running or jumping.

The plantaris is a small and thin muscle that originates from the lateral line of the femur, just above the origin of the gastrocnemius. It helps form the medial line of the calf muscle and passes the Achilles tendon to insert into the ankle. It assists the gastrocnemius muscle but is almost insignificant in its effect on plantar or knee flexion.
