Created in 1964, Andy Warhol’s portrait of Elizabeth Taylor reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with fame and celebrity. Warhol was enthralled by Taylor's beauty, and the many tragic dramas of her personal life, including failed marriages, love affairs, and a near-death experience while filming blockbuster epic ‘Cleopatra’. Taylor was the ideal subject for Warhol, possessing the same heady combination of success, beauty, and tragedy as Marilyn Monroe.
For 'Liz', Warhol took a promotional photograph of the actress, cropping and enlarging it so that the actress filled the screen.
The work will be offered in our Prints & Multiples auction, open for bidding from Thursday 10 September. Click the link in bio to learn more.
